Redesigning Relationships

Mediation can help couples who have conflict but do not want separation or divorce.

Mediation provides an avenue for those who are dissatisfied with the quality of their present relationship, marriage or otherwise, for whom meaningful communication about the issues of concern is difficult or impossible, yet aspects of the relationship remain too valuable to simply cast it aside. Many in such a situation successfully take advantage of a therapeutic approach. Others find themselves, or their partner, unwilling to see a therapist to examine the origins or motivations of behaviors.

Mediators at the Center have worked with such couples. An agreement is entered into to explore the issues causing conflict and to have an open, managed conversation to better understand the interests of both parties. It is then possible with the aid of the mediator to develop as many options as possible to address ways of meeting those interests, analyzing the compromises that might be acceptable. Ultimately agreements are made which may be reduced to writing by the mediator for use as a touchstone as the same or other issues may arise.

This is a pragmatic problem solving approach which typically requires two or three sessions only.
